A VOM is a powerful and very convenient apparatus to measure Voltage Ohms & Milliamperes.

Let us consider a Simpson meter.

To measure current, turn the dial to 500 mA; this will set the full scale deflection to 500 mA. Unless you are certain that the current is less than 100 mA (the next meteer setting), it is safer to start with this maximum setting. The problem with a VOM is which scale do you use. You use the black set of hashmarks and the scale that is appropriate. The choices are 0 - 10, 0 - 250, or 0 - 500.
