D. Particle Accelerators

It would appear that the atomic nucleus is a cluster of smaller particles bound together by strong nuclear forces that are enormous. Rutherford was the first to cause transmutation of elements by using alpha particles emitted by naturally occurring radioisotopes. While this was a useful beginning, scientists wanted to probe the nucleus more deeply by hitting it harder with faster particles. In addition to the sites listed below, you should use your favorite search engine to inquire about the following apparatus:
